HanesBrands Announces Approved Science-Based Targets to Significantly Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions By 2030

July 2023

Iconic HBI brands like Champion, Hanes, Bonds, Maidenform and Bali achieve the most ambitious designation from the Science Based Targets initiative for its 1.5°C-aligned targets

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – (July 26, 2023) – HanesBrands (HBI), a global leader in iconic apparel brands, today announced that its science-based emissions targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The targets set by HanesBrands are clearly defined, science-based paths to reducing emissions that have been reviewed and validated by the SBTi.

“HanesBrands recognizes the urgency to protect the planet by cutting emissions and respects the demand for action from consumers around the world who buy our iconic brands,” said Chris Fox, Chief Sustainability Officer, HanesBrands. “We view the designation as a reminder of our role as sustainability leaders and of our ongoing commitment to address climate change.”

The approved science-based targets for reducing greenhouse emissions for Scope 1 and 2 are 46.2%, and 27.5% for Scope 3. HanesBrands elected to adopt more ambitious goals, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% for Scope 1 and 2 and 30% for Scope 3 by 2030.

Scope 1 and 2 emissions are those that are created in owned operations and through purchased electricity, while Scope 3 is centered on sources of emissions that are external to the organization, such as purchased goods, services and transportation.

The SBTi approval follows the company’s 14th consecutive Energy Star Award in March, and the January announcement that HBI was recognized by CDP for earning A- scores in both climate change and water security. HBI was in the top 12 percent of companies assessed and one of two peer companies to receive leadership status in both categories in the CDP 2022 Climate Change Report issued in December 2022.

About the Science Based Targets initiative

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments. The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets. www.sciencebasedtargets.org @sciencetargets
