HanesBrands Volunteers Remove Waste from Protected Natural Area in Costa Rica
November 2024
More than 1,600 pounds of waste was removed from Tivives Beach in Costa Rica during a cleanup day held by HanesBrands associates.
HanesBrands volunteers collected waste at Tivives Beach, a protected natural area located in the Esparza canton of Costa Rica. Part of a local strategy to restore flora and fauna (plant and animal life) in the country, the cleanup provided a positive impact on the ecosystem as well as the community.
“Around the world, our associates are enthusiastic about improving the life and conditions of where they live and work,” Teddy Mendoza, global sustainability officer – HanesBrands, said. “Our hands-on involvement in preserving a protected natural area promotes environmental awareness within Costa Rica’s growing local textile industry.”
During HanesBrands’ first-ever Tivives Beach Cleanup Day, more than 1,500 pounds of non-recyclable waste and 100 pounds of recyclable waste were gathered from the shore.
While cleaning, associates sifted through the trash to separate out recyclable, recoverable waste, providing discarded items with an opportunity to be renewed and turned into new materials or energy.
“Everyone plays a crucial role in our sustainability efforts. I am proud of our Costa Rica team’s participation in this journey to create a more sustainable planet, and due to our positive impact, the mayor of Esparza canton delivered a special recognition to HanesBrands,” said Roberto Mayer, senior vice president – HanesBrands Supply Chain Operations.
Each year, our associates devote tens of thousands of hours to support charitable work and continue to contribute to environmental progress.
