HanesBrands’ Textiles and Socks Site in El Salvador Awarded for Contribution to Recycling Culture

May 2024

The Zero Waste to Landfill project at HanesBrands’ Textiles and Socks site in El Salvador was awarded the Positive Green Brand distinction, which highlights environmental practices and projects that have a positive sustainable impact in El Salvador.

The Business Foundation for Social Action (FUNDEMAS) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) held the “Delivery of Positive Green Brand recognitions” event, identifying organizations contributing to El Salvador’s long-term efforts focused on waste management and recycling.

The Zero Waste to Landfill project at our Textiles and Socks site has reached 100% diversion of operational landfill waste and promoted a sustainable recycling-intensive campaign, an education of the workforce, and a circular economy.

In 2023, the Textiles and Socks site recycled more than 600 tons of waste and returned approximately 60 tons of materials to vendors for repurposing.

“Through associate collaboration and the site’s strategic alliances with suppliers, our project – which started more than five years ago – has achieved our vision to stop landfill waste coming from our facility,” said Mirna Rodríguez, safety and environment manager – Global Operations.

Out of over 30 public, private and educational organizations participating, HanesBrands is the only textile and apparel company recognized.

According to FUNDEMAS, more than 75,000 people in El Salvador have benefited from the environmental and recycling practices submitted by organizations, with more than $6 million invested. In addition, more than 100,000 tons of waste have been recovered and 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide were captured and prevented from going into the atmosphere.

We are committed to achieving our 2025 sustainability goal of taking zero waste to landfill. We have made substantial progress and are currently diverting 94% of waste from our owned operations from landfills.

El Salvador’s commitment to sustainability has helped us make strides toward our 2030 sustainability goals, including our goal to reduce 25% of energy use in our owned facilities and 25% of water use in our owned operations, as well as a 50% reduction of Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions.
